Charleston Slavery & Freedom Tours

The southern states are still remembered today for having the country’s only slave insurrection. In the early 1800’s Charleston was known as the “Home of African Slavery” and ironically had one of the leading free-black populations, more than any other southern city. The Slavery and Freedom Tour explores many features of southern slavery including the Gullah folklore, the black religious experience, and slave uprisings. The knowledgeable guides will inform guests about the evolution and eventual collapse of slavery, from the inception to the final emancipation. Also covered during the tour are the role of slaves and free-blacks in the Civil War and the effect of the emancipation on black society. Some places that will be included in the tour are The Old Slave Mart Museum, Catfish Row, and the “Ellis Island” of slavery. If you have been exposed to the general stereotypes of slavery; the Underground Railroad, the plantations, and the slave trade but would like to unearth the deeper history of African-American influence in the south, this tour is very informative and you will see there is more to slavery than we may have been taught in school.
