The Charleston Museum
360 Meeting St
843.722.2996

The Charleston Museum was America’s First museum, constructed in 1773. The exhibits displayed at the museum span from the city’s colonial settlement in the 1600’s to present day Charleston. Experience how once Charles Town has evolved in to the culturally rich port city is today. Be witness to the role of free and slave blacks on how the city has grown socially, culturally, and economically. Some of the feature exhibits include extensive collections of silver, slave tags and trading records, and colonial furniture and artwork. Artifacts from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars also can be seen throughout the museum. In addition to human history and the impact it has had on Charleston’s development, the museum also offers skeletons, fossils, and animal specimens that track coastal southern wildlife back millions of years. No matter where your interests are focused, The Charleston Museum has something fascinating for everyone.
