Charleston Insider's Guide > Surrounding Areas > Folly Beach

Folly Beach is a barrier island about 7 miles long just off the South Carolina coast. It is about 8 miles south of Charleston which translates into a 15 minute drive from downtown.

It is home to some of the best surfing in the area. It is largely considered that 'Washout' has the best waves on Folly Beach and arguably within a hundred miles. The Wahine Contest, which takes place in May, draws surfers from several states away. If you’re a surfer in Charleston, Folly Beach is the place to be.

Folly Beach is also home to the Morris Island Lighthouse. It was originally built in 1767, and was the only source of light for ships sailing into Charleston Harbor. The lighthouse, built originally 1200 feet from the ocean’s edge, is now engulfed in water at high tide.

Other highlights of Folly Beach include a full service marina, restaurants, nightclubs and The Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
