Are you afraid of ghosts? Do you even believe they exist? If you aren’t sure, participating in one of Charleston’s Ghost Tours is definitely a good way to find out. Whether you are an experienced ghost hunter or a complete skeptic, there are plenty of well-known stories and places worth visiting for a hair-raising experience. A number of independent ghost tour companies keep the tales of the local apparitions alive.
The city of Charleston has been the setting for two major wars; The Revolutionary War (1768-1774) and The Civil War (1861-1865). During both of those battles, hundreds of infantry fell while fighting for control over Charleston. Many records prior to the Revolutionary War were burned and destroyed during the course of battle, but the reality of the conflict can still be experienced by visiting any of several buildings that played an integral role in the war. Of the most recognized sites, The Battery is near the top of the list. Pirates that were captured by the British were detained and hung here, and eventually the bodies were discarded into the ocean. It is legend that the phantasmal figures can still be seen wandering around the premises, perhaps in search of their lost booty.
One of the most infamous of apparitions in Charleston is the “Army of the Dead.” A battalion of Confederate soldiers had died in a hospital during the Civil War, never having resolution that the war had ended. Locals and tourists alike testify that they can be heard each night, rising from the dead to march north and reinforce General Lee in Virginia. Many accounts declare that at times they can be seen; foot soldiers, ambulances, cannons, wagons, and horsemen in a clouded mist traveling through the streets of historic Charleston. The origin of these spirits may be the Magnolia Cemetery, another ideal location for supernatural activity. A Confederate Monument stands in the cemetery, encircled by more that seven hundred confederate soldiers and two crews of the CSS Hunley who had fallen around Charleston during the Civil War. This location has been deemed one of the most overlooked Civil War sites but is not commonly overlooked by those interested in paranormal activities.
Victims of the violence of two major wars indubitably haunt the greater Charleston area; however those stories are only the beginning of an extraordinary history of paranormal activity.
