Charleston, SC Heyward Washington House

Heyward Washington House
87 Church St.
843.722.0354

In 1791 this townhouse was rented for the use of George Washington’s week long visit to Charleston. This is where the "Washington" of Heyward-Washington originates. The townhouse was built in 1772 by Daniel Heyward for his son’s use. Thomas Heyward Jr., an ardent patriot, was a member of the South Carolina militia during the American Revolution and also a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Charleston Museum purchased the building in 1929 and was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1978. Some exhibits on display include slave tags, an expansive collection of silver, George Washington's christening cup, and a chair that was sat in to sign South Carolina's Ordinance of Secession. On site is also an 18th century well, a carriage shed, and a kitchen building built in the 1740's.
