The Historic Homes Tour of Charleston explores the "South of Broad" residential district; complete with historical homes and immaculate gardens. In addition to visiting two of these mansions, both National Historic Landmarks, you will also learn of Charleston’s past and the areas that influenced how Charleston lives today. Some points of interest along the way include; Historic Rainbow Row, views of Fort Sumter and the Charleston Harbor, the County Courthouse, City Hall, The High Battery, and St. Michaels Church. Within Charleston’s historic district you will find architecture that spans over centuries of the city’s history.
The first house you will visit on this excursion is the Edmonston-Alston House, circa 1825. This magnificent mansion boasts a view of the High Battery and the Charleston Harbor. The Alston House has been preserved, containing original furniture and paintings for almost two centuries. The second spectacular home that you will explore is the Nathaniel Russell House, circa 1808. One of the most remarkable of its traits is the elaborate turn of the century staircase, leading up to several geometric bedrooms with views of surrounding Charleston. This tour gives an idea of what it may have been like to live at the beginning of the 19th century. Most likely you would live without many modern amenities; although, if you came from family wealth, you would find your life to be most comfortable in comparison to others whose fortune is not so great.
